On Monday, Hawaii police identified the 22-year-old Pahoa woman killed last Saturday night in a one-car crash in Nanawale Estates as Shyla N. Medeiros-Dutton of Pahoa. Police said Dutton was a rear-seat passenger in a westbound Honda Civic sedan on Nanawale Boulevard driven by 22-year-old Gary A. Simpkins of Pahoa.  The car left the road and struck several trees and two utility poles. Dutton was thrown from the car into dense brush near the accident scene. Police arrested Simpkins on a variety of charges, including negligent homcide. Those with information on the incident should call police at 935-3311.

The Hawaii Police Department has closed the book on a three-year investigation stemming from the discovery of a badly decomposed body on the Stainback Highway.  Dental records have confirmed the identity of the victim as Shayne Yoshii Kalani Kobayashi of Pahoa.  Police have reclassified the case as second-degree murder and have turned over the case to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for review.  Police have a suspect in mind, but no arrests have been made.

The next free household hazardous waste collection will be held on Saturday, 05 March 2016, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Waimea Transfer Station.  On Sunday, 06 March 2015, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., families can bring their household waste to the Pahoa Recycling and Transfer Station.

Allowable items include automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent lights, and pesticides.

The next collection dates are 04 June 2016 in Hilo and 11 June 2016 at Kealakehe (Kailua-Kona).

According to the USGS, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck 411 miles/662 km southwest of Muara Siberit, Indonesia at 2:49:46 a.m. Wednesday (02 March 2016) did not generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.  See map for more details.

Hawaii police identified the dead man as 38-year-old Ronald Barawis, Jr. of Kailua-Kona, a fugitive who was armed and considered dangerous.  The fatal shooting occurred around 12:20 a.m., Friday, 05 February 2016 at a shopping center off Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo. The photo in this article gives you an overhead view of the crime scene.  Apparently, Barawis refused to get out of his vehicle when police officers wanted to question him.  Barawis reportedly accelerated his vehicle, headed for the officers, and rammed two police cars.  During the escape attempt, officers fired their pistols, resulting in the death of Barawis and the serious injury to a female passenger.  The Criminal Investigations Section will conduct a formal inquiry into the events surrounding the fatal shooting. The Office of Professional Standards will conduct an administrative investigation. Those with information relating to this shooting should call Detective Grant Todd at 961-2385.  Aloha, Russ.

Two sent to hospital after being swept into the ocean in Keauhou Saturday (Jan 16)


At 12:33 p.m. Saturday (Jan 16) Rescue crews responded to the ‘End of the World’ shoreline area near Alii Drive in Keauhou after two people were swept into the ocean.

The two people were venturing into nearby tide pools when large waves swept them into the ocean.  One person made it to shore on his own and notified police.  The Hawaii Fire Department dropped two rescue specialists into the water to stay with the woman until a passing tour boat picked her up. Both people were taken to the Kona Community Hospital for treatment.  The National Weather Service has warned beachgoers to be careful along shoreline areas because of high surf and strong currents.  Aloha, Russ.

ATV accident sends three to hospital Sunday (Jan 17)


Fire/rescue responded to a 12:47 p.m. alarm Sunday (Jan 17) to Keanakolu Road/Mana Road to the cabins area due to an All Terrain Vehicle accident.

The ATV accident occurred off-road on a trail near the intersection of Keanakolu Road and Mana Road.  A Hawaii County rescue helicopter took one injured person to the Hilo Medical Center, while an ambulance transported the other two persons to the Hilo Medical Center.  Aloha, Russ.
