A former Hawaii Island couple who graduated from Konawaena High School in 2009 are angels of mercy to dozens of Houston residents left stranded by Hurricane Harvey.

Ikaika Kaliawa-Smith, his wife Alyssia, and their four children have rescued approximately 40 persons trapped in their flooded homes as Hurricane Harvey swept through the Texas Gulf region.  Smith believes “when someone needs help, you step in and assist.”

Smith, who served two tours in Iraq, said you don’t leave people behind when they’re in need:

“I can’t even explain it,” he said recalling the sight of dozens of Texans trapped on their rooftops. “I’ve been to war and back. I’ve seen a lot of stuff. But when it’s down the road from your house, it’s crazy. Just the helplessness on people’s faces. A lot of people didn’t want to leave, and that was the hardest part — leaving people behind. Their houses can be replaced, but their lives can’t.”

A true demonstration of the aloha spirit!

A fitting tribute to the late comedian and telethon host Jerry Lewis, who died over the weekend at age 91.  Cartoonist Steve Breen of “The San Diego Union-Tribune” newspaper has done a good job of summing up Lewis’s long career in film and television.  Lewis, who has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, was the host of the long-running muscular dystrophy telethons, which raised millions for research and treatment of this debilitating disease.  He will be missed.
