The Friday afternoon earthquake was felt in an area from Honokaa to Laupahoehoe along the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii Island.  I felt the temblor as a brief “jolt” while I was walking from the bedroom to the kitchen.  There were no reported injuries or damage from the earthquake.  No tsunami was generated.

Now that Hurricane Madeline has been downgraded to a tropical storm, the Hurricane Warning has been replaced by a Tropical Storm Warning for Hawaii and Maui Counties.

Madeline now has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/hr) with higher gusts.  Madeline is expected to weaken slowly over the next 48 hours.

Hawaii Island can still expect to have heavy showers, pounding surf, and strong winds in excess of 40 mph.  Tropical storm force winds of between 43 and 51 mph were measured Wednesday, 31 August 2016, at the Kamuela Airport on Hawaii Island.

Hawaii Island residents are now preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Lester, which is about 1,000 miles due east of Hilo on a track that will take it north of Hawaii Island by Saturday, 03 September 2016.  Lester should become a tropical storm by Sunday, 04 September 2016.

Thanks to news blogger Damon Tucker for this update on Tropical Storm Darby.

Although Darby is expected to weaken before it encounters Hawaii Island on Saturday or Sunday, it could bring heavy showers and higher than normal surf.  Winds could gust into the 50 mph range, depending on how much vertical wind shear and cooler water temperatures affect the storm.  Hawaii County Civil Defense officials will keep you posted with updated information on radio, television, online, and through social media.  Be prepared!
