Doctors treated a shark attack victim from Lanikai Beach credit the fast thinking and first aid of a father and son kayak team for saving the man’s life. Charlie Liverton and his son were in the area of the attack and responded quickly to the injured victim, applying tourniquets to the man’s injured legs and getting him to shore.  Doctors say the man could have died if help hadn’t arrived.

Tiger shark pupping season may lead to aggressive behavior | Local News – Home

Shark expert Carl Meyer says more research is needed to determine if pregnant sharks hunt more than their non-pregnant counterparts.

The latest hypothesis about the increasing shark attacks may be tied to shark biology, Hawaiian legends, and starving female tiger sharks after giving birth. Shark expert Carl Meyer believes that shark “pupping” season may have a lot to do with increased tiger shark attacks in Hawaiian waters.  According to Hawaiian legends and recent DLNR studies, most tiger sharks give birth close to shore in October and November–the months that have seen the greatest uptick in shark attacks.  Meyer says that theory needs to be tested and researched before any definite answers are determined for the increase in shark attacks. At least, that’s a working hypothesis that marine scientists are investigating.  Meanwhile, it’s a good idea to stay away from rain-swollen rivers, brown water, and sunset swimming times–all conditions that seem to favor shark activity.

Apparently DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard don’t agree on much these days. Gabbard called the disinvite “the kind of pettiness” one sees in high school.  Politics as usual.

Earth Justice attorney David Henkin tells KITV 4 News that the settlement with the U.S. Navy “limits or bans” the use of “mid-frequency active sonar and explosives in certain specified areas.”  However, some training will be allowed to continue.  Navy officials believe effective training in anti-submarine warfare can still occur under the new restrictions.
