A group of 73 students and teachers from the Ohi Tai Tai School in Taravao, French Polynesia are enjoying a cultural exchange visit with crew members of the Hokule’a at the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s training center on Ford Island in Honolulu.

According to http://www.hawaiiirl.com, the visit was inspired by Hokule’a’s recently completed Malama Honua worldwide voyage of peace and understanding:

“Since the voyage launched in 2013, these students and their teachers have focused on the Mālama Honua voyage and mission. They greeted the Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia crews that sailed into Tahiti on Legs 31 and 31B at Matavai Bay in April 2017, and welcomed them with song, dance and instruments as well as with displays about what they had learned and done over the past four years within the mission of Mālama Honua.”

“While visiting METC, PVS crew members hosted the visiting teachers and students to canoe tours on Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia, star compass demonstrations, video presentations and discussions about the Worldwide Voyage.”

When the Hokulea made port in Newport News, Virginia on Saturday, it had a distinguished visitor.  Radford High School graduate and now head coach of the U.S. Naval Academy’s football team, Ken Niumataolo, stopped by with his family and discussed the Malama Honua voyage with crew members.

The Hokulea will remain in drydock for about a month before it departs for the Panama Canal and, eventually, home in Hawaii.

Sometimes a song can lead you to tears.  Such was the case with Kelly Boy DeLima, the lead singer of Kapena.  DeLima said he was overcome with tears and pride when he saw the Hokule’a docked in New York City, and that feeling helped him remember his childhood 40 years ago when he saw the ocean voyaging canoe for the first time.

The song “Hokule’a, Malama Honua” is available on iTunes with all profits donated to the Hokule’a and her worldwide mission.

Two ancient sailing traditions met last week at New York’s Sylvan Beach. The crew of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule’a met crew members of the Viking ocean going ship Draken Harald Harfagre on 31 August 2016 on the east side of Oneida Lake next to the Erie Canal.

Draken Captain Bjorn Ahlander said his vessel was built to duplicate the historic voyages of Norwegian Vikings to North America around the year 1000.  The Draken completed its voyage successfully, visiting Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland.

Comment:

The voyaging canoe Hokulea made port Sunday, 14 August 2016, in Rhode Island after an “eerie” passage through thick fog outside of Massachusetts.  The fog presented navigational issues, including the inability to see the horizon.  However, by 10 a.m. Sunday, the thick cloud cover lifted and the Hokulea was able to continue its Malama Honua journey. The canoe is heading for New York City, where it will get a new crew and prepare for the next leg of its voyage.
