Power companies respond to solar farm complaint | Hawaii Tribune-Herald


KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaiian Electric Co. and Hawaii Electric Light Co. are disputing allegations that they didn’t follow proper procedures in relation to a proposed plan for solar power projects that would generate a combined 6.75 megawatts at Ocean View.

Opponents of the 6.75 solar power project in the Ocean View area of Hawaii Island claim HECO and HELCO are breaking up the large-scale energy project into smaller operations to avoid strict bidding procedures.

An attorney for HECO and HELCO says the utility companies followed “all applicable rules and laws” and complaints against them “are based upon misinterpretation of the rules.”

In September, the Public Utilities Commission temporarily stopped the solar farm project while it reviews complaints from residents in the Ocean View area.
